Why Moringa?

Moringa Olifera is a fast growing, nutritious deciduous tree that is native around the world including to Asia, Africa and the America's. Moringa trees are commonly also called Drumstick Tree, Horseradish Tree, Miracle Tree or Ben Oil Tree.

In Swahili, it is called Mlonge. The botanical name is Moringa Oleifera. Moringa trees grow best in tropical conditions and prefer six to eight hours of full sunlight, slightly acidic to neutral soil and temperatures between 77-95⁰F (25-35⁰C).

Indigenous people have used them for their nutrition and medicine. All parts of the tree are edible including the flowers, leaves, seeds, seed pods and roots. All parts are a great source of nutrients and antioxidants similar to spinach. We do not harvest the roots because we want the tree to continue to live for many generations.

Types of Moringa

There are over 13 species in the Moringa family and many-cultivars including dwarf varieties. All Moringa trees are fast growing with a growth rate of at least 12 to 15 feet annually. The word Moringa is a Tamil word meaning Twisted Pod alluding to its fruit. The Moringa family's species are classified by their trunk type, big water storing trunks, slender trunks and tuberous shrubs. All of the species were traditionally used for medicine and food.
  • Moringa Oleifera: Slender trunk most common species it is being cultivated, name Oleifera derived from the Latin meaning oil bearing.
  • Moringa Peregrina: Slender trunk native to Africa.
  • Moringa Stenopetala: Bloated trunk native to East Africa.
These are just a few which are commonly found in Africa and globally.
